How to use this timer

  1. Choose 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes, or select More to enter 1–180 minutes.
  2. Select Change to adjust the bell, ten-second settle-in, or interval reminders.
  3. Press Start. After the settle-in countdown, your session begins. Sit comfortably and let your breathing stay natural.

Pause if you need a break; Resume continues the session. To begin again, pause and select Reset. Keep this page open and your device audible if you want to hear the closing bell on time.

New to all of this? Our beginner's guide to meditation walks you through your very first sit, and the mindfulness meditation page explains the most common practice step by step.

Bells, interval bells and settle-in time

Choose a singing bowl, temple bell, gong or wood block. These sounds are synthesized in your browser rather than recordings. Preview each bell at low volume before using headphones. The opening sound marks the beginning of your sit; the closing sound gives you a boundary without having to watch the clock. No ads appear while you sit, so you can leave the controls alone once the session starts.

Settle-in time gives you ten or thirty seconds to put down your device and find a comfortable seat before the opening bell. Turn it off to start immediately. Interval bells can mark a return to your anchor every one, five or ten minutes. They are optional: a silent stretch between the beginning and ending may suit your practice better. Use the interval timer for checkpoints or the sleep timer for a silent ending.

What happens if your screen locks

The display uses elapsed time rather than counting each browser tick. When you return after a screen lock or a suspended tab, it corrects to the time that should remain. Sound is different: browsers may suspend audio, and the ending bell may only sound when you return. Keep the page open and the device audible for a timely bell. Where supported, the timer requests permission from the browser to keep your screen awake; that request can fail.

Pick a length

A short session can fit between tasks; a longer sit gives you more time to notice changing attention. Try a five-minute breathing reset, a ten-minute practice, a fifteen-minute sit or a twenty-minute session. Read the practice before pressing Start, then let the bell handle the ending. There is no need to reach a particular feeling before the time is up.

Your practice log stays on your device

Completed sessions add to minutes today, total minutes and your day streak. This record uses local storage in the browser you are using; there is no account or cloud sync. Clearing site data, using a private window or switching devices can remove or separate that history. If storage is blocked, you can still use the timer, but the record may not persist. Treat the numbers as a useful note about your practice, not a reason to sit longer than you want.

For a paced exercise, try box breathing or the online breathing timer. For alternating sitting and walking periods, use the zazen timer. Our beginner guide helps you choose a comfortable starting practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this meditation timer free?

Yes. All timer settings are free. There are no ads while you sit and no paid timer tier.

Can I set a bell to ring every few minutes?

Yes. Open Change and select an interval of one, five or ten minutes. Interval bells are softer than the opening and closing bells.

How long should a beginner meditate?

Try five minutes or less for your first sit. Choose a duration you can comfortably make time for; there is no required minimum. Our beginner guide explains how to start.

Do I need an account or an app?

No. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to pay. Open the page, pick a length, and press Start.

Where is my practice history stored?

Your streak and minutes are saved only in your own browser's local storage. Nothing is sent to a server, and we never see it. If you clear your browser data or switch devices, the record starts fresh.

What happens if my phone screen locks?

Yes. Use it in a modern mobile browser with JavaScript enabled. The timer requests screen wake lock where supported and recalculates the remaining time when you return to the page. A locked phone or suspended tab may delay sound, so keep the page open if you need to hear the bell on time.
